type='text'>SPINAL CORD INJURIES : NUTRITION BASICS

NUTRITION BASICS -

Here are some of the basics about nutrition and spinal cord injury. This is always a good review for those of you who have heard it before, and hopefully some may learn something new. This information is taken, with permission rom the SCI Informer, a publication of Shriners Hospitals for Children-Chicago.

-Fiber is important for the maintenance of intestinal health and function. It will help with both the loose and hard stools consistency. Fiber absorbs the excess fluids in loose stool and increases the volume so that it is easier to control Fiber hangs on to extra fluids in the colon and can soften hard stools. Fiber also feeds the good bacteria in your intestines that aid in digestion.

-Protein is usually abundant in the American diet. However, after a spinal cord injury, blood levels usually drop due to the increased protein needs for healing from the initial injury. This quickly improves with good intake of a well balanced diet with adequate protein. If the individuals are unable to consume adequate amounts of protein over time then the body uses the existing stores of muscle for both energy and healing. This increases the risk of infection and pressure sores. Once pressure sores develop, protein requirements increase to almost double that required for maintenance due to the need for protein for healing.

-Weigh control is key to independence. While obesity makes transfers, mobility and self care difficult, both underweight and overweight increase the risk for pressure sores and skin breakdown. Individuals with new injuries lose weight due to the loss of lean muscle tissue. This should decrease shortly after the injury and a new baseline weight will be established. The average ideal body weight of an individual with a spinal cord injury is less than that of their able bodied peers.

They are reduced as follows:
-Paraplegia 10 pounds or less
-Tetraplegia 15-20 pounds less
-Water is important for the health of your skin, bowels, and bladder. Maintaining good hydration keeps your skin looking and feeling better. Adequate intakes of fluids, primarily water, keeps your stools soft and easier to pass. Finally, water flushes out your kidneys and bladder to assist in preventing urinary tract infections.

VISIT WWW.INJURYSUPPLIES.COM FOR RELEATED INFORMATION AND TO BUY NUTRITIONAL PRODUCTS.

VISIT WWW.INJURYSUPPLIES.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION

BLOOD SUPPLIES LISTED AS CRITICAL FOR INJURIES

Blood supplies listed as critical for injuries

City Hospital’s Administrative Laboratory Manager John Roush shows shelves empty of blood. Regional hospitals are in need of blood donation for the summer. MARTINSBURG — Just one patient with a traumatic injury or critical need is all it might take to deplete the supply of O negative blood from West Virginia University Hospitals-East’s City Hospital. Cindy McDonald, a medical technologist at City Hospital, eyed a bulletin board listing the amounts available of each type of blood on Tuesday. Only four units of O negative remained stocked — about half the minimum amount preferred in the lab.“Those four can go so quickly,” McDonald said. The health care facility is just one of many in the Greater Alleghenies Region of the American Red Cross currently facing a dwindling supply of blood. Less than a one-day supply of O negative blood — the type that can be accepted by all patients, but only occurs in 7 percent of the population — is available for the region, according to a daily blood inventory report. On June 11, Julie Shiben, donor resources field representative for the American Red Cross, notified hospitals throughout the region of the severity of the current blood supply situation. Types O positive, A positive, O negative, A negative, B negative and AB negative are all listed at critical need levels, while types B positive and AB positive are experiencing urgent levels of need. Blood banks are currently preparing to go into their toughest time of the year, especially with July looming. Families celebrate holidays and go on vacations. High schools and universities, which the Red Cross relies heavily on for donations, adjourn for the summer. In the mix of things, blood drives can get forgotten.“If donors don’t support (the Red Cross) this is what we’re faced with,” Shiben said. “Every type is critical right now.”Since donated blood needs to be sent to Johnstown, Pa., for a battery of tests over the course of one or two days before it can be sent to hospitals for use, areas throughout the region must begin preparing now for the July 4 holiday. “We know we need to have an amazing week next week,” Shiben said. “We’re counting on Berkeley County.”While City Hospital has not had to cancel any surgeries because of the low supply and remains optimistic that they won’t be forced to take such measures, the need for blood and its components still exists, said John Roush, administrative laboratory manager.“We need everybody to get out and donate,” he said. Donors are eligible to give blood once every 56 days, said Shiben, who advises donors to eat a good breakfast and drink plenty of fluids on the day they plan to give blood. They should also bring their ID along when they donate. Low iron levels are the most common reason for donor deferrals, she said. Taking a multivitamin with iron, along with avoiding caffeine and dairy products for a few days prior to the planned donation date can help. Taking a multivitamin with vitamin C also increases iron absorbtion, Shiben said. Potential donors can visit www.redcrosslife.org for more information or to find a blood drive. “It’s definitely a life-saving thing,” Shiben said.
VISIT WWW.INJURYSUPPLIES.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION

NECK PAIN: WHAT INCREASES YOUR RISK

Neck Pain
injury's
What Increases Your Risk

Risk factors for neck pain that you cannot control include:
Age. Yet when you have rheumatoid arthritis, exercising regularly is one of the best things you can do to take care of yourself and your joints. Here is why exercise is so important:

People who exercise live longer, with or without rheumatoid arthritis.
Regular exercise can actually reduce overall pain from rheumatoid arthritis.
Exercise can keep your bones strong. Thinning of the bones can be a problem with rheumatoid arthritis, especially if you need to take steroids. Exercise helps bones keep their strength.
Exercise maintains muscle strength. Regular exercise improves functional ability and lets you do more for yourself. People with rheumatoid arthritis who exercise feel better about themselves and are better able to cope with problems.

Is Exercise Safe If You Have Arthritis?
Is exercise safe? Yes -- certain kinds of exercise are proven to be safe for people with rheumatoid arthritis. There are three types you can do: stretching, strengthening, and conditioning.
Stretching exercises are the simplest and easiest. They consist of stretching and holding different joint and muscle groups for 10 to 30 seconds each. Stretching improves flexibility, and daily stretching is the basis for any exercise program. Strength exercises involve working the muscle against resistance. This can be either with or without weights. Resistance training strengthens the muscle and increases the amount of activity you can do pain-free. Conditioning exercise, also called aerobic exercise, improves cardiovascular fitness. There are countless benefits to aerobic exercise! Among them, it makes your heart and blood vessels healthier, prevents disability, and improves mood and well-being. Good conditioning exercises for people with rheumatoid arthritis include low-impact activities like walking, swimming, bicycling, or using an elliptical machine. Any of these will get your heart pumping. After being cleared by your doctor, you should try to do 20 to 30 minutes of low-impact conditioning exercise on as many days as you feel you can. More is better, but any amount is better than none at all!

Exercises to Avoid if You Have Arthritis
Are there any kinds of exercise you should avoid? In general, you should be careful about activities that put a lot of stress on a joint, or are "high-impact," such as: Jogging, especially on paved roads
Heavy weight lifting That's not to say that these activities are totally off-limits. If you're interested in trying them, talk to your doctor first. Your rheumatologist can help you create an exercise program that is right for you. This may also involve meeting with a physical therapist. Physical therapists can identify what areas you need to work on, choose the right exercises for you, and tell you how vigorously you should exercise.
There are also community exercise programs designed just for people with arthritis. People with Arthritis Can Exercise (PACE) and the Arthritis Self Help Course (ASHC) are offered by the Arthritis Foundation (www.arthritis.org). You should work with your treatment team to design the right plan before starting to exercise, especially if you have other medical problems. As you start to exercise regularly, you'll realize the benefits, and you'll know you've taken control of your rheumatoid arthritis. Soon, not only will your joints feel better - you'll feel better too.

SOURCES:
de Jong, Z. Sorenstam, who staged a successful defense when the championship was first played at Pine Needles in 1996, will join Mickey Wright and Betsy Rawls as a record four-time winner if she claims the trophy on Sunday. But after a serious back injury, the 36-year-old Swede, who has dropped to No. 3 in the world, is just getting back in the swing of things.
"At the moment, I am just concentrating on getting back to 100 percent fitness and being able to play again full-time," Sorenstam said. This is just her third tournament since an enforced six-week break.
When Sorenstam defeated American Pat Hurst at Newport Country Club a year ago, Wie finished tied for third. It was her third top-five finish in a major last year. Since then, the 17-year-old's career has been on a downward spiral, and the final blow came when she broke her wrist in a fall in January.
She has only played two tournaments in her comeback - pulling out of the first after just 16 holes and then finishing last of the 84 qualifiers at the McDonald's LPGA Championship three weeks ago.
"My wrist is getting stronger, but I still have good days and bad days," Wie said.
A long U.S. Open course where the premium is on accuracy may not be the best place to test it out.
Alexis Thompson, at 12 years and four months, becomes the youngest player to compete in the championship. In her third attempt at qualifying, she made it in her home state of Florida earlier this month.
VISIT WWW.INJURYSUPPLIES.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

http://www.injurysupplies.com/ has a variety of supplies for an injury such as carpal tunnel. Log on to http://www.injurysupplies.com/ and browse the products and treatments for carpal tunnel.

Arthritis: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The carpal tunnel is the passageway in the wrist and is made up of the arching carpal bones (eight bones in the wrist) and the ligament connecting the pillars of the arch (the transverse carpal ligament). The median nerve and the tendons that connect the fingers to the muscles of the forearm pass through the tightly spaced tunnel.
Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve becomes pinched due to swelling of the nerve or tendons or both. The median nerve provides sensation to the palm side of the thumb, index, middle fingers, as well as the inside half of the ring finger and muscle power to the thumb. When this nerve becomes pinched, numbness, tingling and sometimes pain of the affected fingers and hand may occur and radiate into the forearm.

While there are many possible causes of carpal tunnel syndrome, the vast majority of people with the condition have no known cause.
However, we do know that excessive repetitive movements of the arms, wrists or hands can aggravate the carpal tunnel bringing out the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome. Untreated, this can become chronic, but when detected early, carpal tunnel syndrome can be treated and recovery is possible in a few months. Severe carpal tunnel syndrome can also be treated, but recovery may take up to a year or longer and may not be complete.
What Are the Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Usually, people with carpal tunnel syndrome first notice that their fingers "fall asleep" and become numb at night. They often wake up with numbness and tingling in their hands. The feeling of burning pain and numbness may generally run up the center of the person's forearm, sometimes as far as the shoulder. As carpal tunnel syndrome becomes more severe, symptoms are noticed during the day.
What Happens in Severe Cases of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
When chronic irritation occurs around the median nerve, it becomes constricted and is continually pushed against the ligament above it. When the nerve is continually constricted, it can become compressed to the point that it begins to deteriorate. This results in a slowing of nerve impulses, which may cause a loss of feeling in the fingers and a loss of strength and coordination at the base of the thumb. If the condition is not treated, it could result in permanent deterioration of muscle tissue.
Do Certain Medical Conditions Make People More Likely to Develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
People with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or other metabolic conditions like thyroid disease may be more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. These conditions affect the nerves directly, making them more vulnerable to compression.
What Tests Help Diagnose Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Two useful clinical tests for diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome are the Tinel and Phalen maneuvers. Tingling sensations in the fingers caused by tapping on the palm side of the wrist is a positive Tinel test, whereas reproduction of symptoms by flexing the wrist is a positive Phalen test. (Dr. Phalen created this maneuver many years ago when he was a hand surgeon at The Cleveland Clinic.)
If needed, an electromyogram, which includes nerve conduction studies, is done to document the extent of nerve damage. An electromyogram is a test that measures the electrical activity in your nerves and muscles. Nerve conduction studies measure the ability of specific nerves to transmit electrical impulses or messages.
The nerve conduction studies, however, will not become positive until there is significant nerve damage. In addition, the severity of a person's symptoms is often not correlated with the findings of a nerve conduction study.
VISIT WWW.INJURYSUPPLIES.COM FOR MORE INFORMATION

www.
